Yesterday Mashable reported that President Obama will begin posting his own tweets to the @BarackObama account on Twitter. The account has been in place since 2007 and was a vital source of information from the President’s campaign team, and a note on the reelection campaign site yesterday noted that the team is taking a new approach with Twitter that will give the public more access to the President’s voice directly, with tweets coming from him to be signed -BO.
While the president has had a team running the account for him (as do many other leaders, celebrities, and extremely busy people–I wrote about ghost tweeters–including Obama–two years ago), the updates have been campaign related rather than personal. But given the President’s opinionated nature (he did call Kanye West ‘jackass’ after all), it will be interesting to see what he finds Twitter-worthy. Twitpics of First Dog Bo taken with his beloved Blackberry? Whatever that message is, it won’t be his first actual tweet–that came last year during a visit to the American Red Cross after the earthquake in Haiti, when my smart thinking friend Wendy Harman, director of social media for the Red Cross, typed a tweet and asked the President to hit send. So at least we know he knows how it works!
Any guesses on what the first Presidential tweet will be? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

The President’s first tweet went up about 20 minutes ago–a sweet Father’s Day message to all the dads out there.
